Exotic Flower Pinwheel

How to Make a 4th of July Pinwheel

Happy 4th of July!  How about making a fun and festive pinwheel?!?  The perfect DIY project for the 4th of July (or an average summer day!)

Exotic Flower Pinwheel

The key is to always start with a square.  I used Close To My Heart’s Exotic Flower Hostess Stamp Set (B1477) since it is a perfect square.  To make this project interesting, I decided to use a piece of transparency rather than cardstock.  I stamped the image using Black StazOn ink (Z888.)  Then I flipped the piece over and colored in the image using ShinHan’s Warm Grey (Z2468), Carmine (Z2448) and Marine Blue (Z2458) Markers.

Cloiseup Exotic Flower Pinwheel Once it’s all colored, you’ll want to cut each corner so that your 90 degree angle becomes a 45 degree.  You’ll want to leave an equal space in the center–this particular stamped image has the perfect stopping point–a center circle.   pinwheel diagram Then you’ll pull one of the flaps toward the center, repeating this process using the same flap from each corner.  I chose to use a large brad to affix all flaps to the center.  Finally, I grabbed a paper straw and poked a hole in it using my Piercing Tool (Z2046) and had the brad holding the pinwheel together go through the straw as well–now it’s all held together by the same brad!  Following this process will allow your pinwheel to spin, provided the straw barrel is wide enough to allow the brad prongs to move about inside it.
