I absolutely love making these bag toppers. They are the perfect way to add a creative, handmade touch to a gift AND it prevents the recipient from being able to peek in the bag!
Plus, they are fairly easy to create, too. Which when you’re on a time crunch (always the case during the holidays, right?!?) is always a wonderful thing.
You’ll want to measure the width of your gift bag then add a 1/2″ to that measurement. For the height of the topper, this will be determined by your design–it doesn’t need to be a precise measurement. You’ll figure out what you want on the front, make sure you have enough space and then double it since it will fold over the bag. My bag topper here is 9″ x 8-1/2″.
Then you’ll center your cardstock piece below the handles, mark about a 1/4″ on either side of the handles and then create an oblong cutout for you to insert the handles through.
The last step is to decorate your bag topper as desired. For my bag here, I attempted to keep it a little more masculine. I used the Silver & Gold Scrapbooking Stamp Set with Coordinating Thin Cuts Dies.
You can take this idea and create these bag toppers with any size gift bag making it a really versatile project idea! This past weekend, this was one of the projects at my Annual Boxes, Bags & Tags Class. The ladies loved this project. I think I can say with 100% confidence that each of them will be creating some more of these bag toppers this holiday season!
